When you consider the human design of two inputs for sound and one of the reasons for this is that sounds need to arrive at the brain at slightly different times to make sense of them. By design our hearing is balanced giving us the ability to pick out voices in a crowded room with many sounds.
The way we are able to tell where a sound originated is via binaural hearing. The brain does some very complex things with the sound that comes in both ears to create balance. If you can only hear in one ear it will be very difficult to tell where any sound in coming from.
The sound that reaches the brain from both ears adds requiring much less volume to understand what is being heard. You may find the occasional exception to rule. But having two hearing aids is by far better than one in almost all cases of hearing loss.
